size: 210×297 cm (three panels)

medium: acrylic on canvas board

the artist would like to gauge how successful she is in portraying her message. feel free to interpret the art in whatever way, and please email your responses to [insert email here]. your participation is greatly appreciated, as it will help her in more ways than you can deign to perceive.

among the various responses, there was this interesting one about being force-fed/stifling chinese upbringing. i thought that was quite interesting.

actually, i wanted to show the decadence of familial ties through the emptying/lessening of grains. notice how the containers for the grains become more ‘flat’ and lacking decoration. the brushstrokes too become increasingly patchy, providing less and less detail. also the breakability of the plates/bowls were supposed to suggest the fragility of relationships.

first is a bowl of rice (it was supposed to be white rice but i didn’t have enough white…) in a porcelain bowl. next is some green beans in a blue-and-yellow striped ceramic bowl. last is a handful of barley on a stark white plate.

there was supposed to be a forth panel, with just one bean left either without a plate, or in a broken plate…but didn’t have time to finish before the exhibition…/: but ahwells i think it works in a set of three.

i wanted to display them in a row so people could see the progression, but after noticing the nice window ledge of the artshouse i had to use it. i think the arrangement made the whole thing more dynamic in a sense (see x- y- z- axis).

but overall, i met a lot of new fun people (: so even though no one wanted to buy them (it’s still up for sale by the way), i’m still satisfied with how things turned out. though i’m not as pro as some people to have their stuff win SYF (read: karlotte), i think that this small scale project let me experiment with things that i would usually not dare to do in school (marks are daunting). i’m particularly interested in how i can get the people to interact with the work…? plus their comments helped me fill a lot of pages in my visual diary. so it’s good (:
