WARNING | NOT SUITABLE FOR PEOPLES UNDER THE AGE OF 18
(my parents had to sign a consent form to let me take this course.)
THE LAST SESSION WAS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME ARGH.
We got to choose what medium to use. So coloured pencils it was.
This is the guy changing poses every minute. Annoying as hell. It’s no Muybridge but heh.
The same thing repeated with markers. I think he was walking around to sit on the chair.
This was quite fun. Each person had a A2 paper and started drawing. Then after like 5 minutes (?) everyone got up and moved to the next seat! So each person drew on everyone else’s paper!

And so that concludes the 8-week long live drawing course! *applause*

I hated this lesson. It was about lousy things. What lousy things? You’ll see in a while.
Bored and waiting for the lesson to start. See what I meant by willow isn’t black enough?
Then we had to draw. Using a TREE BRANCH and INK. Seriously. If I’m stranded in the wildnerness, I wouldn’t be drawing. If I wanted to draw the wilderness, I’d have brought my own materials.
So we drew each other sitting around drawing other people sitting around drawing other people sitting…
And finally the model came. Late. Thank goodness he wasn’t nude! I really do a lot better with lines. He actually looks proportionate.
Seated pose. 30 min. The folds in his pants are really hard to draw, especially when there’s some pattern running all the way down the leg. You can see I sort of gave up halfway. As usual, I botched the face. He doesn’t really have much hair to draw.

I can’t really think of anything to say. This lesson felt like a waste of time. At this point in time, each session just seems like drawing practise, which I can do on my own!

Back to the female model again this week, but this time doing long poses. I tried to focus on getting the light/dark and tonal values in this. Willow charcoal really does make things look nicer and more ‘artistic’, no?
Back. 15 min. I don’t know why she can’t change her hairstyle for just one session; the flyaway strands are really annoying me. I think I could’ve done the subtle gradiations on the back better. The whole back looks kind of flat, save the spine depression…(EDIT: I’m typing this up in 2012, and backtracking the publish date. But anyway I went on to use this in a lot of my university application portfolios.)
Lying down position. 20 min. I tried mixing compressed and willow charcoal, because willow isn’t black enough. Anyway, I’m really terrible with faces huh.
Stretched out. 30 min. I think I accidentally made her too emanciated. And there wasn’t enough space for the foot. Lousy drawing, if I must say. She looks too wooden and floating on the sheets.

I realise my problem is that I’m almost always too concerned with lines, and charcoal isn’t very good at drawing lines. So the figures always end up looking slightly strange… I have to work on thinking of objects in terms of its mass, and in terms of planes of verying greyness. It doesn’t help that my astigmatism keeps increasing (in one eye) and I’m hopeless at defining edges with that eye…

However…THIS POST IS NUDITY-FREE! Because we were doing portraits.
Alethia, side view. I got lazy and didn’t shade the hair. Done with a graphite pencil.
This is blind contour. It’s really interesting to see how your eye sees. I heard there’s this newfangled robot that can draw portraits (EDIT: I’m actually typing this in Feb 2012, but backtracked the publish date). Irina has a really complex lacy top…
Jeremy. Note how the lens breaks the continuity of the eye. Also, I can’t draw lips.

Fairly little drawing this session, because half the time was spent posing!

This week there was a MALE MODEL. We were supposed to observe muscles and how they changed with movement, which is slightly ironic since the model has to be stationary to be drawn…
Weight pushed on one leg, slight contrapposto. I like the right foot; the left not so.
This pose was supposed to offer more ‘movement’ as compared to the first, but I don’t think it made any difference in my drawing. You can imagine the strain and effort, but it’s only imaginary because he’s pushing against a chair.
Another pose on contrapposto and the flexibility of muscles. I botched the face/head. And the right arm looks dislocated. I should have done a better underdrawing.
Sitting pose. I wanted to change position but there was nowhere to squeeze…awkward much. I have problems with feet and faces.

Okay. I’d take a female model over a male model any day! That’s probably because I understand the female anatomy better, plus it’s more organic and the lines flow (even if the model is haggy).
