to motivate myself for the intense studying required next year, i decided to pamper myself and make me a weekly planner. because i haven’t used one since i was 13. and i guess next year i’ll be super busy and might forget some stuff. and by making one myself i’d have the incentive to actually use it.

first i gathered tons of scrap paper lying around the house and cut them up. 21x9cm for the pages, 21x10cm for the dividers.

the papers i used are a mishmash of chinese compo paper, foolscap, square paper, graph paper, brown paper, cream paper, printed-on-one-side paper, etc.

then i cut the dividers properly. each is 3.5cm in width.

here you can see the paper better. and then i lettered them with text transfer.

it’s 36pt clarendon med.

then i made a template thing for lining the paper and lined them. then numbered them.

and now the hardcover. i’ll just say all the steps at once because i’m lazy to keep putting images and then typing. so i’ll just type all and then put all the images. it’s pretty self-explanatory.

i cut cardboard of dimensions 23x11cm and 23×0.9cm. stuck them to white paper with slight gaps in between. trimmed off the excess white paper. folded the edges in and stuck them down.

this bit may be a little tricky for some people but i’ve stretched my own canvas and folded the corners so i know how to do it. just fiddle around with the corners until you’re satisfied.

now the pages! stick them together, and then onto a strip of paper. and then stick the whole thing onto the cover.

then i cut coloured paper of dimensions 21x10cm and stuck it on the inside covers.

and now to befoul the pristine white cover!

run amok with text transfer! this time it’s american typewriter. numbers are 16pt, alphabets are 20pt.

that’s the front.

and the back.

and the spine.

and so i’m done! my brother wasn’t impressed /: or maybe he’s given up on me because i waste my time doing stuff like this. but i think i did a good job! i’m rather happy with it. except that maybe the 1cm border is a bit too big. i’m starting to think craft is better than painting because you actually make something substantial and usable…(possible idea for coursework…?) talking about painting, i haven’t done any actual art-ish art this whole holiday. what a wonderful art student i am, aren’t i?

i’m hungry and it’s lunchtime and i don’t have the time to properly type a nice long post so this is it.

oh right. merry christmas everyone! (:

clock #1 – landslide

first i glued the balsa cubes together. each one is painstakingly hand-textured. and there are over a hundred of them go figure. plus the balsa powder thing was flying everywhere threatening to give me asthma. or sinus. or some permanent respiratory problem.

and then i used liquid shoe wax to stain it darker. emphasises the crevices. here it is half stained. it’s a nifty tricked i picked up last year when doing the stupid parquet flooring. i was very, very, very happy with the results of my fake parquet flooring that i kept only that and threw away the rest of my set just this week when cleaning my room.

and then i covered it with sand mixed with decoupage applied with a brush. hanqing gave me whatever was left from her coursework. you can also see the tiny hands there. with cork sheet cut out and pasted over.

when you look at it from the back. the cubes look really precariously glued together. it scares me a bit.

clock #2 – cyclone

i took some rings…(by ‘some’ i actually mean >$30 of them)

and connect them…lots and lots of them…while i was doing this and moaning away, jessica told me the story of the LOTR chainmail guys. bless their now-nonexistent fingerprints. and their dedication. and their wonderful chainmail which is way nicer than this chain of rings.

clock7

and then start hanging it with fishing wire. the fishing wire was…generously donated by baolin. it’s really amazing how much stuff seniors have left to get rid of after coursework. and the first time i stringed it up, it looked really horrible. so i had to re-do it. here’s the second take.

bottom view.

side view. it’s not much really. because it’s supposed to be viewed from the bottom as in the previous picture. and i really need a photo of it up in the gallery with the light on. the shadows are just. sublime.

clock #3 – tsunami

i broke some glass and cleaned the shards. the glass powder is annoyingly dangerous. and it gets everywhere, even in the whorls of my fingers. and it hurts. thankfully i wasn’t stupid enough to get cut.

and i stuck some tiny shards on the hands. this was uber fun.

i finally understood what ‘trials and tribulations’ meant after this one. the glass didn’t stick well and kept falling apart. and this is the first ‘finished’ one, which means it’s actually after 5-6 sessions of re-gluing till everything holds.

but alas, it fell apart.

and so, after it TOTALLY FELL APART i stuck it back in this form.

top view. oh by the way, i spray-painted the thing white.

closeup. and this is what i submitted.

but alas, it was not meant to be. it keeps falling apart. and i keep having to glue it back. even on the exhibition opening night i was on standby with a tube on superglue in my pocket (i kid you not). so a warning: if what you see at the gallery differs slightly, you now know why.

glass is troublesome. i should have used perspex. but there’s nothing like seeing people’s expressions when you tell them that it is real glass. and they go into perpetual shock and wonder why your fingers are still intact. whoever said glass was dangerous and kept it away from their kids is stupid. they just don’t trust that their kids have enough intelligence and common sense to handle it properly.

and so these are my 3 finals. i scored kinda high because i experimented with a lot of media.

so that’s that. no more ilp! coursework: here i come!

(actually, i’m not all that enthusiastic…)

for artemis handover, we had to customise a cactus each. so i put a whale on mine.

so i coloured and lined a whale with watercolour

and drew a speech bubble with baolin’s name in it. (yes his chinese name is hideously complicated. and that’s saying something coming from a person with 瀛 in her name.)

and then cut them both out, laminated the speech bubble with tape, and stuck a toothpick on the back.

(this is how you laminate something with tape.)

so here’s the finished product! *gasp* THE WHALE SPEAKS!!!!

(the back view.)

so there! that’s baolin’s cactus (with a talking whale).

Title: Growth? Urbanization?

Medium: Plaster of paris, Acrylic paint

Size: 37 x 39 x 44cm

Date: August 2009

Combined artwork done by me, Yong, Yunxin and Ping Ting. Made using plaster of paris. Cutting shreds of plaster of paris, dip them in the water, splat them on a mould and wait for it to harden(it was actually quite fun :D). We moulded them piece by piece (each around 9 x 7cm) on a ruler and on a half spherical mould. Then joined them together by connecting them with more plaster of paris. The roots are moulded using our fingers. The longer ones require the connection of a few finger moulds (Yunxin has a long and slightly crooked index finger, perfect for making roots :D). They are actually disfigured or slightly mutated buildings with roots growing out, supposingly  portraying the theme of urbanization. They are painted orange because we had decided that orange was a nice and striking colour.

—-

just like she said (: the insides are painted as well, but dark brown. if not when you look through the windows you can see white (of the plaster).

since i missed the first lesson of this project when i went they had already finished most of the taller building and some roots. so i did the second curved building with yunxin. as well as making more roots, which was rather hard on my finger as it was already bruised from chia’s diablo practise.

the roots are textured with the texture paste (by me (: ). to have a more bark-y feel or non-wall feel or something. and it was fun slapping on the paste and poking and spreading it.

overall i think i’ve learned how to paint a sculpture while 3 other people are trying to do the exact same thing. we ended up a tangle of arms and brushes and ‘chiammy pass the paint!’ and such.

sometime last december, i picked up this book from the library. it was adorable sock dolls to make and love by connie stone and emola lowe. so i decided to try making them. seeing as december is quite a free and easy month. unlike now. (GIVE ME BACK MY HOLIDAY!)

CIMG1525

CIMG1526

#001 — alligator.

didn’t turn out right. because the sock in the book was those full length kind all the way to mid-calf. so it ended up having a miniscule body. and puffy legs. but I STILL STAND BY THE OPINION THAT IT’S CUTE! it’s the first i’ve made. so i’m naturally defensive about it. deal with it.

made with old school socks. that’s why it’s an albino. and i couldn’t find matching buttons so one eye is larger than the other.

made with a pair of white socks. and two buttons.

#002 — psudo-dinosaur.

this was made for rubin! because there was a giraffe in the book. and i tried making a grey one. then realised after i sewed the body and two legs that it wouldn’t stand. so turned it into a dinosaur.

made with two pairs of socks. one grey, one dark grey. and two buttons from spotlight. nice shade of blue, isn’t it?

CIMG1536

it with it’s loving new owner.

CIMG1530

#003 — mouse.

for my aunt. because she’s born in the year of the rat. so figure how old she is. my own design. the feet were tortourous to make, being tiny and all.

made with one white sock. and three buttons; two black and one pink.

====

CIMG1627

#004 — timcanpy.

from d.gray-man. for a senior’s burthday present. because she really likes shonen manga. so figure which senior that is. this was by far the most challening one to make. because it has many many parts. there’s the main body, four feet, two wings and a tail. i’m getting quesy just thinking about it.

the tail was perfectly tedious. look at the weird shape! and i actually stitched the swirl-pattern in two colours. the wings were horrible too. because i had to sew them on the reverse side, flip, and sew again. not to mention stuffing. *shudders* i am never going to make another winged creature. ever. unless it’s poultry and i can give it stupid-looking basic-shaped wings.

made with a pair of yellow socks. and part of a white sock.

====

CIMG1697

CIMG1698

#005 — cow.

this was complicated to make too. because i put in effort to make sure the stitches were tight and close together (ie strong). in the end, most people couldn’t tell it was a cow /:

made with one white sock (the other half leftover from the mouse) and part of another white sock (the one leftover from alligator). also some leftover bits from the dark grey sock (see psuedo-dinosaur). and 4 buttons. two black, two marbled.

—-

types of stitches used were many. there was running stitch. and some weird stitch. i’ll fill it in when i borrow the book again. the stuffing was some kind of polyester fluff? because cotton wool was too expensive. i still have a lot left, for those who want me to make something for them. NOTE: I WILL CHARGE YOU.

actually seeing that i have felt left over from the teacher’s day stuff, you can ask for felt things too.

—-

basically each doll took about 3 days to 1 week? 3 days was when i spent like the whole afternoon on it. tiring. very tiring.
